There are times, when I am with members of my family, that little snippets of the
past are either jogged into memory, or arrive there for the first time. On one of
my last holidays with a bunch of my daughters (I could be described as a tribal
leader as much as a father!) it was suggested that I put down some of the history
for the benefit of the rest of the clan. Well, as its my story, I have decided that
some artistic license and embelishments are appropriate to add a bit of spice.
I am not quite sure how this will pan out, but at best I hope it is interesting if not
amusing, book version! Nice for the coffee table!!
During my life I have managed to pick up 4 nicknames. I´ll detail these during the
course of my narrative, but will start with one that I feel has a bearing on me/my
work/my family .... and perhaps I should use a capital F for Family: La Macchina,
in english: The Machine (or alternatively Camera, as in macchina fotografica -
fitting my profession - or another alternate: Car).
In Italy it is common to hear the phrase "guida la macchina". This could be taken
to mean either "drive the car" or "give guidance to the machine" ie tell La
Macchina what you need him to do. My sister-in-law used to use the expression a
lot - though I was never sure if she was either practising the only Italian that she
knew, or if she was telling me politely to go away!
OK, so this "La Macchina" nickname stuff is starting to sound a bit like The Mafia.
As it happens this is not such a wild thought.
Patience please ... all will be revealed in the fullness of time - or sooner!.

Where appropriate and possible
I will have incorporated some
family photos in this history. A
picture tells a 1000 words ...
and if you check the NUJ rates,
between prices paid for photos
and those paid for text.
"La Macchina" with Mum in
Venice - around 1969. Note my
shades, double-breasted jacket
(despite the July heat) and
tasteful subtely patterned shirt
with matching tie.
Note also the traditional
mafia-moll stance ( ready to
hold me up in case I suddenly
become bullet-riddled) !
